Erie Preparatory Academy to add Cross Country & Track Programs

Erie Preparatory Academy (EPA) is excited to announce the addition of both cross country and track & field programs in the 2025/2026 school year. The teams will compete in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) as single A teams. EPA is a boarding school for international students and an affordable private school for any local students that are interested in a Christian school education with small class sizes.

The cross country and track programs will be coordinated by EPA Athletic Director and Mathematics teacher Ryan Kelly, who has over 20 years of experience coaching cross country and track at both the high school and college level. At the high school level, Coach Kelly led 6 teams to top 10 finishes in the state and helped numerous athletes garner Division I and Division II  college scholarships.

Ryan Kelly has coached at Edinboro University from 2010-2012 under the tutelage of Head Coach Doug Watts, who is one of the most decorated coaches ever at the Division II level.

Both the boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the national meet each year Coach Kelly was on the Edinboro staff and numerous athletes in both cross country and track & field earned All-American status at the national level.

Doug Watts was a legendary figure in collegiate cross country and track & field, best known for his 44-year coaching career at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. From 1969 to 2013, he transformed the school’s distance running program into a national powerhouse, leading his teams to six national championships and mentoring over 200 All-Americans. Known not only for his championship pedigree but also for his mentorship, Watts built a legacy rooted in discipline, resilience, and the lifelong success of his athletes—both on and off the course.

The cross country program runs from the beginning of the school year until early November. The track season starts in early March and concludes at the end of May. All athletes planning on joining the cross country team should start their training over the summer months. Building mileage over the summer months is pivotal for success in the fall season.
